Zimbabwe plans to build at least 1 350 schools from November 2026, with more than US$600 million in funding, Primary and Secondary Education Minister (MoPSE) Professor Torerai Moyo has said. The aim is to wipe out the national school infrastructure deficit by 2029.
The gap is large. In July, Moyo put the shortfall at about 1 800 schools, down from roughly 3 000 in 2020, according to The Herald. He said then that the Government built 120 schools last year and was targeting at least 150 in 2026.
The new target is a sharp step up from that pace. In July the minister also said a private sector partner had committed to building 1 000 schools, and that learners should not have to travel more than five kilometres to reach one.
